The Sybase Classic was an annual golf tournament for professional female golfers on the LPGA Tour from 1990 to 2009. The event was originally known as the JAL Big Apple Classic, sponsored by Japan Airlines and presented by GOLF Magazine from 1990 until 2001. The software corporation Sybase began sponsoring the tournament in 2001, when it was renamed the Sybase Big Apple Classic. "Big Apple" was ultimately dropped from the name in 2007 when the tournament relocated from New York to New Jersey. The Sybase Classic was presented by Lincoln-Mercury from 2003 to 2006, and by the ShopRite supermarket corporation from 2007 to 2009. [1] From 1992 through 2006, ShopRite sponsored the ShopRite LPGA Classic on the LPGA Tour.
From 1990 through 2006, the event was held at the Wykagyl Country Club in the Wykagyl section of New Rochelle, New York. In 2007 the venue was changed to the Upper Montclair Country Club in Clifton, New Jersey. The tournament was last played in 2009. Sybase began sponsoring the Sybase Match Play Championship in 2010.
Over the years, proceeds from the event went to benefit charities such as St. Joseph's Healthcare System, Inc. and the Boys & Girls Club of Clifton.
